The determination of functional parameters of miniaturized electromechanical components, e.g. micro relays, is a crucial task in production process. For actuators like relays the positions of moving parts and the forces during travel and at the end positions, respectively, are very important quantities. Today, a direct method using a mechanical sensing device is widely used to determine these quantities. Due to the increasing miniaturization this method will not be applicable for future components, especially for micro systems. For that reason new means of measuring forces and positions are needed. The paper describes an approach where position and forces are obtained from electrical signals using adaptive signal processing algorithms. The design of these algorithms is based on simulations of the physical effects and of the entire measurement system.
